This seems to be all sorted out now. Especially thanks to the new double-check target 'make extra-distcheck'. The rest I guess can be shifted to the general validatiokn. Closing.

As I see it (state of r1712), the only broken rule is 'make check' in the absence of NOWEB (i.e., done by the user in the unpacked distribution), if build and srcdir are different.
'make', 'make install', 'make installcheck' do work. 'make dist / distcheck' is not expected to work w/o NOWEB anyway.
So only in this case, the source files for the gamelan self-test have to be copied srcdir -> builddir.
I'll try to do that this evening.
