The interesting thing is: it is in the corresponding shared object file!!! I don't get it.

On a clean system it worked. This - like many other problems - seems to be one of destructive interference between different setups of libraries.

This was not caused by the upgrade I did on the libtool components from 2.4.0 to 2.4.2 in r3627.
