Description
Following the example of the LPPP school: what do you think about creating a VirtualBox? image (say, debian) which contains a full installation of WHIZARD & friends in /opt? As there is an opensource edition of VirtualBox? available for Linux, Mac & Win, this image would offer a working installation of WHIZARD for all platforms, and importing it into Virtualbox is a trivial act of three clicks. As VirtualBox? can virtualize multiple CPUs, this would even support OpenMP, and floating point performance shouldn't suffer from the virtualization. The only drawback is the increased memory usage from the OS overhead.
In addition, this image could be used for the workshop exercises --- participants can preload it on their machines and will have a consistent working environment for the excercises.
I would volunteer to prepare such a thing, however, we'd also need webspace to host the image, which would be something like 2GB I guess. What do you think?

OK, if you host it, I'll prepare an image. As a sidenote, installing the open source flavor of VirtualBox? is trivial as it is available in the package managment of all linux distributions, and simple installers for OSX and Windows can be downloaded from the website.

What is the status of this? Seems to have been working during the MPI (this time Max-Planck institute) tutorial... Any refinements pending, or is this task completed!? I offered to host the image at DESY...

The image indeed worked, and setting up VirtualBox? on the students machines (mostly macs) proved to be painless and easy. I'll have a second look at the image this week (I have some ideas for improvements, provided I find the time to implement them), so you'll be able to upload it next week. This should give the workshop participants ample time to download it and set it up. Download size will be something between 1.5GB and 2GB (don't remember from the top of my head).

Shall we close this ticket now, or is there anything left where it is intended to serve as a reminder?

I think there are at most mino improvements but that generically we can close that ticket.
Sounds like a good idea. It could for sure endow this URL with enough memory to host the image:
I guess for general tutorials, this would make life easier a lot, though enabling VirtualBox? is not too trivial a task. So if it does not cost too much time, go for it.
